Resume writing principles that help in interviews
"Responsible for managing the analytics team" is a responsibility. "Led a 6-person analytics team that reduced reporting cycle time by 60% and delivered $1.2M in cost savings" is an achievement. Every bullet should show what you accomplished, not just what your job was.
Numbers make achievements credible and memorable. Team size, revenue, cost savings, error rate reduction, time saved, users impacted, or growth percentage โ any metric is better than none. If you don't have exact numbers, use ranges or estimates with appropriate caveats.
Every bullet on your resume is an invitation for a follow-up question. If you listed "implemented machine learning models," be ready to discuss the algorithm, the training data, the business problem, and the outcome in technical detail. If you can't, remove it or rephrase it.
A generic resume is a missed opportunity. Read the job description carefully and reorder your bullets to front-load the experience most relevant to each role. Specific tailoring significantly improves both ATS screening and interviewer engagement.
Frequently asked questions
How long should my resume be?
One page for candidates with under 10 years' experience; two pages maximum for senior candidates with extensive relevant experience. More than two pages is almost never warranted. Recruiters spend 6โ10 seconds on initial CV review โ conciseness matters.
Should I use a CV or resume template?
Clean, ATS-friendly formatting beats fancy design. Avoid tables, text boxes, and graphics โ many ATS systems can't parse them correctly. A simple, well-organised one-column layout with clear section headers and consistent formatting is ideal for most roles.
