How HireVue interviews work
The employer sends you a link. You have a window (typically 3–5 days) to complete it. You can't see the questions in advance.
Each question shows for ~30 seconds before your recording starts. Use this time to structure your answer — you can't pause once recording begins.

7 tips to score well on HireVue
Structure your answer as Situation → Task → Action → Result. HireVue's AI is trained to look for logical structure. Rambling answers score poorly even if the content is good.
30 seconds is enough to plan a STAR answer. Mentally note one word for each stage — Situation, Task, Action, Result — before the recording starts.
It feels unnatural but looking at your webcam lens — not your own image — creates genuine eye contact in the recording. Practice until it's automatic.
Aim to use 80–90% of the allotted time with a complete, specific answer. Trailing off early suggests you ran out of things to say; going over time gets cut off.
Nerves cause people to rush. Slow down deliberately. Pauses feel longer to you than to the viewer, and clear pacing improves transcription accuracy.
A neutral background and a light source in front of you (not behind) signals professionalism before you say a word.

HireVue analyses eye movement and consistency of speech patterns. Looking down repeatedly is a strong signal of reading. You can have bullet points in your peripheral vision for emergencies, but answers should be spoken naturally — which is exactly why practice matters.

HireVue has historically offered facial expression analysis as a feature, though many employers have disabled it due to bias concerns. Assume your recording is reviewed by a human recruiter — present yourself as you would in a live interview.
How many questions does a HireVue interview have?
