Prepare for Your HireVue Interview

One-way video interviews are different from everything you've practised before. No interviewer to read, no follow-up cues, a timer you can see counting down. ScreenReady simulates the exact format so it feels familiar when it matters.

What makes HireVue different from a normal interview

No interviewer You record answers alone — no reactions, no body language to read, no follow-up from a human. Your recorded delivery and structure are the only signals the reviewer receives.
Strict time limits HireVue cuts you off when the timer ends — often mid-sentence. You must structure answers to land a clean conclusion within 2–3 minutes. Running over is an automatic bad signal.
30–60s prep window You see the question and get a short window before recording starts. Candidates who haven't practiced freeze here and start recording without a clear structure.
AI scoring HireVue's AI evaluates facial expression, word choice, speaking pace, and answer structure. Confident delivery and clear STAR answers score positively across all its dimensions.
No retakes Most configurations give you one attempt per question with no re-recording. Every answer must be composed and deliberate. Hesitation and restarts are highly visible on camera.

Common HireVue behavioral questions

These are representative of the behavioral questions used across HireVue screens by major employers. ScreenReady generates realistic variations tailored to your role and target company.

HireVue tips that actually work

1
Use STAR for every answer

Situation → Task → Action → Result. HireVue AI and human reviewers both look for clear answer structure. Answers that jump straight into a story without context, or that end without a stated result, score consistently lower.

2
Look at the camera lens, not your own face

When you watch yourself on screen, you appear to be looking slightly down to the reviewer. Force yourself to look at the camera lens. It feels unnatural, but reads as engaged and confident to the person watching your recording.

3
Use the prep window deliberately

Write the core structure of your answer in bullet points during the prep window: Situation (1 sentence), Action (3 key steps), Result (the number). Do not write full sentences — just triggers to keep your answer on track during recording.

4
Front-load your structure

Open with a one-sentence summary: "I'll answer this with an example from my time at [company], where I [brief situation]." This signals to the reviewer within the first 10 seconds that you're structured and organised.

5
Set up your environment properly

Plain background or a tidy room. Good natural or front-facing light (not backlit). Quiet. Camera at eye level. Test your mic and camera on ScreenReady before your actual HireVue — technical issues on the day are avoidable and costly.

6
Watch your own recordings back

Most candidates never watch their own recordings. This is the biggest preparation gap. You cannot fix filler words, pacing, or eye contact that you don't know you have. ScreenReady records your webcam so you can review your own performance before the real thing.

Which companies use HireVue?

HireVue is used across industries for high-volume hiring. If you're applying to a large employer, there's a good chance your first screen will be video-based — whether or not it's technically HireVue.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a typical HireVue interview?

Most HireVue screens include 4–8 questions. With 30–60 seconds preparation and 2–3 minutes to answer each, the total session runs 20–40 minutes. You can pause between questions while your current answer uploads, but cannot re-record once submitted.

Can I see my HireVue recording after submitting?

Some HireVue configurations allow you to view submitted answers, but most do not — once submitted, you cannot review or re-record. This is why practicing on ScreenReady beforehand (where you can watch yourself back) is so valuable.

Does HireVue AI determine whether I pass?

HireVue's AI provides scoring signals to the recruiting team — it is rarely the sole decision-maker. However, low AI scores can filter candidates before any human sees the recording. Structured STAR answers, confident delivery, and appropriate body language all contribute positively to HireVue's scoring models.

Is ScreenReady the same as HireVue?

No. ScreenReady is independent practice software — not the actual HireVue platform. ScreenReady simulates the same format (30-second prep, timed webcam answers, AI feedback on structure and delivery) so you arrive at your real HireVue screen already comfortable with the format.

What if I don't know the answer to a HireVue question?

Never sit in silence or say "I don't know." If you're caught off guard, buy time with structure: "I'll answer this with an example from [context] where I had to [brief situation]..." Start talking, and the story often follows. Silence and long pauses are very visible on video and score poorly.

Practice the HireVue format now

ScreenReady gives you 30 seconds to prepare, then records your webcam with a 2-minute answer timer — exactly matching the HireVue format. AI scores your STAR structure, delivery, and camera presence.
